People I work with often express difficulties with feeling "stuck" in their life; they are grappling with a conflict that they have problems resolving. Some people also have profound issues with relating to themselves and other people, which can contribute to feeling isolated. These problems may prevent a person from experiencing life in a meaningful way.
My therapeutic orientation is primarily psychoanalytic or psychodynamic. Psychoanalysis (“the talking cure”) is a form of psychotherapy that recognises the importance of the unconscious and someone’s life history in influencing one’s current personality.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy aims to enable the person to speak freely about themselves and their problems within a safe and supportive environment. Speaking in this way can lead to someone becoming aware of unhelpful repetitive patterns, which have interfered with their ability to experience satisfaction in life. Through ongoing exploration and the development of a positive therapeutic relationship, a person can become less encumbered by pain and can gain alternative helpful solutions to their problems.
If you would like to learn more about the psychoanalytic perspective, this Youtube channel is a fantastic resource for Psychoanalytic knowledge. This is also a worthwhile outline to read.
